Working with the LGBT+ Community

The above areas are just some of the issues faced by many people feel, irrespective of their sexual orientation.   Historically,  however, the difference between heterosexual sex and gay sex is that until just sixty years ago gay sex was illegal in the UK. Since becoming legal, sex between men (sex between women has never been technically illegal), has become increasingly accessible.

The last ten years has seen the advent of websites and apps making sex as deliverable to our doors as take away food.   Despite this long awaited sexual liberation, this has come with some challenges.   The availability of sex has for some, created a ‘disposable’ attitude to relationships, an attitude which says if it’s not working throw it out and get a new one.  It could be argued that we have lost the ability (or desire) to work on relationships and work on ourselves so we can become more tolerant and understanding of our partners.

Others may be finding that even when in a long-term loving relationship they have developed habits in their attitude towards casual sex, which results in them spending time on apps and websites looking for casual encounters in what could be or become an addiction.

How can Counselling help?

Working with. a professional practitioner who has a wealth of specialist knowledge and experience in this field can help change the way you feel about yourself, in turn, enables individuals to feel in control of their sexual behaviour (rather than what can often feeling like their sexual behaviour controlling them).

How I Work

Typically, when working clients, I use a Psycho-Dynamic approach. This means placing significance on a persons early experience of life (especially their early relationships with significant others, parents siblings and peers). I believe that these early experiences are often responsible for shaping a personality in adulthood.  I also work Integratively. This means I use the best counselling approach to suit the clients needs, which may mean that more than one approach is used.
